Katarina Witt started ice skating at age five. Her talents soon became evident as she enrolled to a private school that caters for children with a talent to play sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. This was where she was introduced to the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. Witt made her breakthrough year in 1982 after she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. After that, she began dominating the sport thanks to her elegance and grace. Olympic victory At Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female gold medal in figure skating following an extremely close contest. In a tighter competition the following year, Witt won the gold medal. The free skate she took was not a success, however the gold medal was awarded to her because of the performances she made during both compulsory figures (short programme) and the compulsory figures. Witt is the only female figure skater to win the same competition twice, since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame After enjoying great success in the field of acting, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Witt was seventh in the competition, and she delighted the crowd despite not winning a medal. Witt got her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
